Are you sure you watch a comedy?

My friends!

I write here about comedies, new in general, but do not forget about old ones too (I mean “old” actors, famous comedians). And suddenly the following thought came to my mind: what is the comedy in general? There is a definition of a comedy as a genre:

Comedy is a genre of art, characterized by a humorous or satirical approach, as well as the type of drama, which specifically solves the effective time of conflict or struggle of antagonistic characters.

There are two types of comedies: a comedy of characters and a comedy of situation.

A comedy of situation is the comedy where events and cases are the sources of funny moments.

A comedy of characters (comedy of manners) is the comedy where the source of funny moments is the inner essence of the comic characters, their funny and ugly one-sided hyper trait or passion (defect, flaw). Very often a comedy of manners is a satirical comedy because it ridicules all those human qualities.

Which comedies do you prefer? Do you like to watch people in funny situations of do you prefer to laugh because of any personal qualities?

  4. well John, maybe they laugh at people who had a cake thrown to their faces or the people who fall all the time in streets. but these are situations actually... i do not know people who laugh at some person's defects. it would be strange indeed.
